Castle Paints invests in new Testing Equipment

Tuesday 9 November 2021

The Elcometer 106 Pull-Off Adhesion Tester (PAT) is easy to operate and is a fully portable Type II adhesion gauge – (Fig. 1) which provides a numerical value for adhesion strength.

It is used for testing adhesion parameters on both Industrial and agricultural coatings systems on a varied range of substrates.

It is contained in a handy, rugged case making it ideal for site tests – (Fig. 2). An Aluminium test dolly is affixed to the system under test using a proprietary adhesive (Epoxy/Polyamide or Cyanoacrylate) – (Fig. 3)

Using the Elcometer 106, the instrument is attached to the dolly and the internal spring arrangement within the PAT applies a lift force to the dolly as the tension increases during the test – (Fig. 4 & 5). When the dolly is pulled off from the system under test an indicator on the machine shows the numerical value of the adhesion strength required to remove the dolly – ( Fig. 6).

The dolly is inspected to determine the mode of failure – (Fig. 7). This can be glue failure, adhesive failure, or cohesive failure within the film.
